Best Yoga Mat Ever

MY FIRST B YOGA MAT CAME TO ME. I WAS IN LA, VISITING A NEW YOGA STUDIO IN THE WAREHOUSE DISTRICT THAT I HAD BEEN FOLLOWING ON INSTAGRAM. IT WAS A HUGE SPACE, WITH TALL CEILINGS, LOTS OF LIGHTS AND A VERY IMPRESSIVE VEGAN CAFE.

It was a stop on the way to Burning Man, and as any things do when you’re on the way to Burning Man, my B Yoga Mat came to me when I wasn’t looking for it. A friend of mine and I had stopped for lunch at the warehouse studio/café – a necessary refuel after spending the afternoon at the American Apparel Factory Store.

The café truly was impressive, and we gorged ourselves on rich vegan milkshakes.

It was only on the way out that I stopped by the studio space, just as much to check it out as to pitch myself to organize the studios’ retreats. A set of block coloured mats near the reception desk caught my eye.

Deep purples, ocean blues and sunflower yellows sprouted out of an rustic wicker basket. The simple display sat in stark contrast to the grey-white concrete walls that framed the warehouse space. The mats were from a Canadian company, the bubbly receptionist told me. Recycled rubber, ranging thickness. Yes, they do come in travel size.

I left with an email and an $80 yoga mat – a purchase I’m still not sure why I made. I’ve nerved been the type to purchase an $80 yoga mat – not when $20 Gaiam mats exist at every Target everywhere. Perhaps it was the frustration of having recently splurged a $40 Manduka travel mat and finding it completely unsatisfactory. Never ending slipping. So off I walked with my bright red BMat, Burning Man bound.

The mat not only survived the dust but thrived there. Between morning practice at the yogi camp to dusk headstands in the dust, I fully expected my mat to deteriorate after one week. How wrong I was. My BMat survived the dust and the trip back to Rio de Janeiro. So it came along on a hike up Machu Picchu and to Thanksgiving in New York. My BMat traveled with me through Spain and Portugal; through the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica.

Nearly two years later, my well traveled BMat has hardly a mark – just a few scratches from an overly happy yogi cat. It gained a partner too – a 5mm deep blue mat for my husband – easily worth the price tag.
